I got my film back today...it was bittersweet. For some reason, the girls film did not come out. All was under exposed. That made me sad...and kinda pissed because film is freaking expensive to process. SO there was lot's of high hopes...only to be quickly taken away and melting into tears. That got me thinking. How much we put out hopes and dreams...and many times they just don't "develop".
And so I have been struggling with this concept a lot lately...not developing. Why do some things develop perfectly...while others just...don't.
*sigh*
I can't answer that question. So instead of continuing to bang my head against the wall, I just shrug my shoulders and go "oh well". So be it. That's life. No rhyme or reason for some things.

Anyway...I need to discuss Pinterest. I am thinking of getting rid of that too. Makes me so sad, cuz I love it and it feeds my creative soul. But I keep reading more and more things that disturb me. Today I read this article and it really got me thinking.
So all my pinner buddies...what do you think?

That article gave me a lot to think about and no doubt it is copyright infringement. Makes me wonder "why" I'm doing it in the first place...except that I like the things on my boards....oh boo.
Hi Caroline,
I guess film is just one of those hit or miss deals. I like the look of film - you got some fun shots - but, for me, I like better odds..... or at least the opportunity to shot at no cost but my time :)
Yep, life is filled with some high hopes met and others not met. Our college aged daughter says, "that's just how it rolls". She rolled a good one, just got accepted into WSU's nursing program... so life is v. good, at the moment!
Take care and roll on!
P.S. no pinning for me - no time.
Wow. Insightful about "development" of hopes, dreams, photos. Thinking... thinking...
On to the whole pinterest thing. Love looking at others postings but never got into it myself. Partially because I know all that copyright stuff & how touchy and confusing it can be. Want to honor others wishes but w/the net & sharing it's hard to know what's what. Same reason I only post my own photos on my blog. Mostly. :) Plus, I can't add one more time suck to my already full online addiction! Ha ha!
Soooooo..... I'll be interested to read what others have to say.
drat. sure hoping I can figure out what the heck those two words are below. so hard to read this new word verification crap. am I getting old?
Oh C...I remember film days and how you had to wait 5-7 days to pick up and when you are 13years old, know nothing about photography and have such high hopes for the day your pictures are ready for pick up and.......ughhhhh you get them back and it's one crappy photo after another!
I'm so glad we live in the digital age and instant gratification.
as far as Pinterest goes....I do love looking. Maybe I just won't pin as much...unless I just have to have it on a board. I don't pin outside of the site though. I only buzz through Pinterest if I have absolutely nothing else to do....and in reality, I always have something waiting for me!
First off, I love your film photos, Caroline. I was sad for your girls in regards to theirs, though.
After reading that article, I'm wiping my boards off Pinterest. Freaked me the hell out. I'm done.
I'm so glad you shared that Pinterest article. I was on the brink of giving in & signing up, but since I haven't created the habit yet I think I'll stay away instead of need to break myself from it down the road.
My deepest sympathies for the disappointing film. I've had to deal with some feelings of near-rage while sitting in the Walmart parking lot after getting a roll back. If it makes you feel any better, the photos that did turn out here are fabulous - I especially love the suitcase-man & the biking-man.
Yes, I was wondering that about Pinterest too -- seems to be one massive copyright infringement to me. But perhaps no more so than blogging, LOL, of which I'm guilty too.
okay, i'll be in the minority/unethical category. I see so many blogs which re-post photos from all kinds of sources and often don't even give credit to the source. i would never attempt to print anything and consider things "inspirational" unless an actual tutorial or tip of some sort. i am not making/taking any profit away from anyone...unfortunately, it may be the price of posting things on the internet. I dunno.
Film - love it when it's good, hate it when it's bad.
Love reading your ideas about develop and enough! hit home...
great photos as always. so sorry about the girls film not coming out right. with them better luck next time. not sure about pinning either. kind of scared and might just take eveything down until things change?
Oh bummer about the underdeveloped film, but what gorgeous photos did turn out! I absolutely LOVE the look and feel of these. I'm always flirting with the idea of going back to film but haven't taken the plunge yet. I even bought some impossible project instant film for an old Polaroid camera I have but it cost so much I'm afraid to even use it! lol.
I read this article earlier today. The way I see it Pinterest, tumblr, even our dear blogger are all avenues which people share other's work. Even if credit is given do we seek out the creator every single time to ask permission? I know if your stuff is on pinterest and you don't want it to be you can ask them to have it removed. I had something I pinned removed from one of my boards (not photography related) and I didn't understand why except that maybe someone would try to re-create it. But...it's on their website...so...yeah I still don't get it. I guess because I'm one of those that more often than not does follow the links back to it's place of origin so I can find mor goodness. Just seems to me the only way to display your work online with out running the risk of theft is to plaster it with a watermark.
Personally, I'm not getting rid of my pinterest boards.
This makes me open my eyes, I always pin onto my boards if I like something, And if I ever post about anything I see on Pinterest I put found on pinterest....now I am torn.
hope you are well , think of you often.
I thought long and hard about Pinterest before I began pinning. I did a bit of research, but nothing to the extent of the lawyer/photographer and author of the eye-opening article. I do try to give credit to the original photographer in my pin, but became frustrated by places like tumblr where the original source is seldom given. It can take copious amounts of time to find who to give credit to. I have asked for permission from bloggers if they mind if I pin, and if there's a Pinterest button, I assume that the photographer would be honored if I pinned. As much as I love my boards and having a place to file ideas, inspiration, and things that make me smile and sigh, now I'm wondering if it's worth the trouble that may ensue. Hmmmm...what to do.
Photos that didn't develop sucks! I hope your daughter isn't too disappointed. I wish I knew why some things develop and others do not. If you discover the answer, please share, cuz I'd sure like to know.
Film is OK but, looking at your shots, I got to thinking about the good ol' days when I first started taking photos. At first, my (film)photos were wonderful and I was happy but, interestingly, as I started to really learn things about my camera, the photos were not that great and got worse. The end result...I put the camera away for years until digital showed up. Now, I can't get enough! RE Pinterest....I will need to read that attached article but, true confession, I've never looked at that ap/site/whatever it is. I have no idea what it's about but I do know I have so little time to do what I really want to do (blog, photograph, relax!) that I just can't add one more thing to the list. Truly sorry about the girls film! Love the man-hole cover shot....NYC Sewer..Made in India!!!!
