The other night I watched Yes Man with Jim Carrey.
I really didn't want to watch it...cuz I am not a huge fan...but a friend said that it was actually pretty funny. So I took her word for it and was pleasantly surprised how much I liked the movie. Basically, Jim's character has to say yes to everything for an entire year...and it shows how much his life changes for the better.
This movie really got me thinking...
I often say no to things...mostly practical things. For instance:
- No I am not going to volunteer for another thing (since I already do too much!).
- No I will not put another thing on my plate.
- No I will not fold the laundry right now.. ;)
- No I am not going to start that "thing" because I may not finish
But what do I say yes to?
Do I miss opportunities because I am too scared to say yes?
Or am I too lazy to say yes?
I am not saying that you have to go out into the world and say yes to every little thing that comes across your plate...but before rushing to say no...think about what would happen if you did say yes...
Well...I think I might being saying yes a lot more...
BTW...loving your questions!! Thanks ;)
Take a peek...I am blooming 365 days in 2010

I've watched that movie about 5 times now (very funny IMHO). I learned a great lesson from it and your quote sums what I learned perfectly.
"Only when we are no longer afraid do we begin to live."
So Very True!
gorgeous processing on your shot!
and no, i can't always say yes but i could say yes more. just like i could say no more too
interesting thoughts! i'm actually a person who has a problem saying yes to what everyone else asks me to do...making me too busy to do what i would really want to do. i need to say yes to myself a little more. thanks for this post!
oh, and by the way.... I loved that movie, too !!
I said yes for years when the kids were little and then backed away from that word in order to have a break....but in the past 5 years, there is hardly a thing I say "no" to anymore....I just don't want to miss anything :)
and YES...my rock from yesterday should be on your desk :)
I did this a few years ago, took notice of how often I defaulted to "no" and began to take, what felt like risks to me, and said "yes" more often. It did change my life for the better.
BTW, that video was hilarious. It would make a good aerobics workout.
I too am not a fan of most of Jim Carey's films but found myself watching this one. I blogged about it too... I find myself mentally refering to it time and again! A worthy reminder!
I was a yes girl for way too many years and had to learn to say "NO!" Now, I'm enjoying the liberation of no and only saying yes when it feels right.
yea, that movie surprised me too, and got me thinking... also about saying 'no' to my kids habitually...now i'm trying to really stop and go 'why not? is there really a good reason they shouldn't do x or y?'
i see you are using formme also, i keep seeing it everywhere lately, will have to give it a try!
hmm. very interesting concept! i wonder if saying yes more often would change my life for the better. humph! i guess i should try it out!
I think intentions play a big part in saying no or yes. If one is saying no with a healthy intention of boundaries, it may be better than saying yes with the intention of pleasing others and hurting self.
Fear is also a big part of my life, and I am glad your exploration is inspiring me to see where I can say yes out of courage instead of no out of fear.
I didn't think I'd like that movie either, but I did.
I haven't seen the movie, but I may have to now.... thanks for sharing.... I'm a no-thinker at times. I think that goes with being a procrastinator.
Not a huge Jim Carrey fan either, but I did enjoy that movie.
Huge congrats on the Getty image thing! That is so awesome!
I love the photo - and the light shining in towards the center.
oooh, still hard for me to say no, but I'm getting better with age,no?!
as for Jim Carrey, I get tired just by watching him in action...

I've been saying too many yeses lately for my son's school. I feel stretched to the max. Love the post. Thanks for the video clip too.
This is synchronicity because before I came on the computer I was just thinking about the very same film. I loved it - and the idea behind it. It also has Rhys Darby (a kiwi comedian) in it - you know, his colleague who has those weird fancy dress parties - and that made it a special film too. But seriously there is a message behind it - and I think it was based on a book, which might be worth a read?
